Third Sunday of Easter
Condescend to all weaknesses and infirmities of your fellow creatures,
cover their frailties, love their excellencies, encourage their virtue,
relieve their wants, rejoice in their prosperities, compassionate their distress,
receive their friendship, overlook their unkindness,
forgive their malice and condescend to do the lowest offices to the lowest of mankind.

CALL TO WORSHIP
God is calling. Do you not hear?
You are being called by name, for a purpose.
God, you have searched us and know us.
You discern our thoughts from far away.
Do not confuse the siren calls of the world for God’s call.
Do not confuse the values of this world for God’s values.
You know, O God, when we sit and when we stand.
You know when we lie down and where we go.
Your words and your deeds are known to God.
You were known to God before you were born.
Your knowledge of us is more than we can understand.
Your thoughts embrace us amid all you have created.
OPENING HYMN ………………………………………………………………….. #514 God Who Touches
PRAYER OF INVOCATION
We have gathered this morning, O God, because you have spoken your word of summons and welcome. We are drawn irresistibly to the promise of your presence and by the persistence of your call. Speak to your servants here in ways we can understand. We want to hear the message you intend for us. We want to listen, not because someone else needs to have it told to them, but because we ourselves are needy. Your expectations of us are high and holy. We tremble before you, eager for the heavens to be opened in our midst for our transformation. Amen.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
We can hide nothing from God, who knows our every thought. God is aware of sins we have not recognized. We cannot be right with God unless we examine ourselves and repent. Let us confess our sin before God and one another, and may God have mercy.
May Christ have mercy.
May God have mercy.
O God, our lives are an open book to you. Help us to recognize in ourselves what you have seen there. Remove the distortions that keep us from acknowledging our sin. Awaken in us a sorrow over the wrong we have done and the good we have neglected. Create in us an earnest desire to change. O God, we are in touch with the pain we have caused and the pain within us. Because of your love and care, we can face and overcome the sins we here confess. Amen.
WORDS OF ASSURANCE
Hear now these words of assurance:
Your struggles to know yourself are prompted by God’s love. God leads the community of faith beyond what is lawful to what is holy. We are not our own. We are Christ’s. By God’s grace, we may turn from self-serving ways to selfless ministries. Glorify God.
GLORY PATRI ………………………………………. #35
THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION
This is the joyful feast of the people of God. Men and women, youth and children, come from the east and the west, from the north and the south, and gather about Christ’s table.
God be with you.
Lift up your hearts.
Let us give thanks to God most high.
We give you thanks, almighty and eternal God, always and everywhere, through Jesus Christ, the only one begotten by you before all time, by whom you made the world and all things.
We bless you for your continual love and care for every creature. We praise you for forming us in your image and for calling us to be your people.
Although we rebelled against your love, you did not abandon us in our sin, but sent to us prophets and teachers to lead us into the way of salvation.
Above all, we give you thanks for the gift of Jesus, our only Savior, who is the way, the truth, and the life.
In the fullness of time you came to us and received our nature in the person of Jesus, who, in obedience to you, by suffering on the cross, and being raised from the dead, delivered us from the way of sin and death.
We praise you that Jesus now reigns with you in glory and ever lives to pray for us.
We thank you for the Holy Spirit who leads us into truth, defends us in adversity, and gathers us from every people to unite us in one holy church.
Therefore, with the entire company of saints in heaven and on earth, we worship and glorify you, God most high.
Holy, holy, holy God of love and majesty. The whole universe speaks of your glory, O God most high. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of our God. Hosanna in the highest!.
Words of Institution
(This church practices open communion. All are welcome to partake.)
On the night that he was betrayed, Jesus took bread. After giving thanks he broke the bread and passed it to his disciples saying, “Take this all of you and eat of it. This is my body that will be broken for you.” Ministering in his name, I serve you now the Body of Christ.
In like manner, Jesus took a cup. After giving thanks he passed it to his disciples saying, “Take this all of you and drink. This is the cup of the New Covenant in my blood, spilled for the forgiveness of sins.” Ministering in his name, I serve you now the Cup of Salvation.
Prayer of Thanksgiving
Almighty God, we give you thanks for the gift of our Savior’s presence in the simplicity and splendor of this holy meal. Unite us with all who are fed by Christ’s body and blood that we may faithfully proclaim the good news of your love and that your universal church may be a rainbow of hope in a suffering world; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON ……………………………………………………. Jonah 1:1-10
Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.” But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD.
But the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up. Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep. So the captain came and said to him, “What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call out to your god! Perhaps the god will give a thought to us, that we may not perish.” And they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. Then they said to him, “Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us. What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?” And he said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him, “What is this that you have done!” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
PSALTER LESSON ……………………………………………………………. Psalm 139
Search me O God, and know my heart
O God, you have searched me and known me!
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.
You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.
Even before a word is on my tongue, behold,
O LORD, you know it altogether.
You hem me in, behind and before,
and lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
it so high I cannot attain it.
Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
If I take the wings of the morning
and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea,
even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.
If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,
and the light about me be night,”
even the darkness is not dark to you;
the night is bright as the day,
for darkness is as light with you.
Search me O God, and know my heart.
EPISTLE LESSON ………………………………………….. II Corinthians 5:16-21
From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
HYMN ……………………………………………………… #518 This Is A Day Of New Beginnings
GOSPEL LESSON …………………………………………………………… Mark 14:43-52
And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.” And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, “Rabbi!” And he kissed him. And they laid hands on him and seized him. But one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled.” And they all left him and fled. And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.

TITHES AND OFFERINGS
Let us use our wealth to proclaim the one in whom we place our trust; that creative energy of love who fills the whole universe and has been revealed to us in Jesus Christ.
Through our offerings, O God, we proclaim Christ to the world. We dedicate all we are giving to preaching, teaching, and outreach that moves people toward Christian maturity. We offer ourselves as advocates for the poor and needy, as seekers of justice, as stewards of hope. We turn from false securities to put our confidence in you, that the mystery of your glorious word may be opened up among all your people. Amen.
