First Sunday in Lent

Lord, who throughout these forty days for us did fast and pray,
Teach us with you to mourn our sins and close by you to stay.

Introit ………………… Sweet Hour of Prayer
by Casting Crowns

CALL TO WORSHIP
Temptation surrounds us at every turn, inviting us to take just a little more.
More food, more money, more power, more life!
“What could it hurt?” we hear, on television, from friends, in our own souls.
More suffering, more hunger, more need, more fear, more anger.
So we gather today in worship to hear the consequences of “more.”
And to celebrate that we do not need “more” when we have everything in Christ.
Beloved of God, let us drink deeply from the wellspring of God’s Spirit, which has all we need to live fully, love deeply, and serve faithfully.
Thanks be to God!

OPENING HYMN …………………….. #180 Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days

PRAYER OF INVOCATION
God, you are our hiding place and our refuge in the time of distress. We turn to you now, seeking comfort from the wounds of the world and power to face all our afflictions. Be present in our struggle, and help us to rest in your eternal promises, that we might be fed both with the nourishment of your word, strong to resist temptation and faithful in our worship of you. Amen.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
In our day, we cannot escape temptation, for it comes in so many forms, from so many sources.  As Jesus was tempted, so are we. But we have yielded to temptation, and Jesus did not.  Sometimes we do not even recognize the sin into which we have slipped.  We seek to recall them now. Let us confess our sin:
Creative, passionate God, you delight to shape the world in beauty and harmony. You invite us to participate in the balance of creation. We grow in wisdom as our experience unfolds; we take good learning out of difficult situations yet also find our well-meant endeavors leading to unintended consequences. Too often we give in to temptation that disrupts the joyous, chaotic order of the universe. We cannot undo all our mistakes, but we can turn once more to the living presence of Jesus and find new ways to live and love each other and the earth.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE
Hear now these words of assurance:
In Christ’s life, ministry, death and resurrection, we are made able to persist, upright and strong, for our sins are forgiven.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON ………………………………………………… Genesis 1:1-12

Mark Fenne reads the Old Testament Lesson

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

PSALTER LESSON …………………………………………………………. Psalm 32

Kim Valentine reads the Psalter Lesson

Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven,
   whose sin is covered.
Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity,
   and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
For when I kept silent,
   my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.
For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;
   my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah
I acknowledged my sin to you,
   and I did not cover my iniquity;
   I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,”
      and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah
Therefore let everyone who is godly
   offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found;
   surely in the rush of great waters, they shall not reach him.
You are a hiding place for me;
   you preserve me from trouble;
   you surround me with shouts of deliverance. Selah
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
   I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
Be not like a horse or a mule,
   without understanding,
   which must be curbed with bit and bridle,
   or it will not stay near you.
Many are the sorrows of the wicked,
   but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD.
Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, O righteous,
   and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!

EPISTLE LESSON ………………………………………………………. Colossians 1:15-19

Alec Fenne reads the Epistle Lesson

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities  —  all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.

HYMN ……………………………. #183  We Meet You O Christ

GOSPEL LESSON ……………………………………………………. Matthew 17:1-8

Pastor Clancy reads the Gospel Lesson

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “’Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “’He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “’On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “’You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

TITHES AND OFFERINGS
In Christ, we see humanity’s strength and God’s glory made manifest – the harmony of creation restored. We offer these gifts and tithes as we seek to restore balance and beauty to a world gone haywire with temptation and deceit.
Faithful God, let these gifts be like food and drink in the wilderness for those who have suffered and longed for your presence. May these offerings strengthen those who are resisting temptation and lead us to attend to all who need your healing touch. This we pray in the name of Jesus, our example and savior. Amen.
